WhatsApp will soon let you read voice messages on Android | Technology News

WhatsApp is working on adding a handy new feature for Android users – the ability to transcribe voice messages.

The functionality was spotted in the latest WhatsApp beta version 2.24.7.7 by tipster AssembleDebug. By digging into the app’s code, they uncovered strings of text referencing voice message transcripts and the requirements for enabling the feature on Android.

According to the beta code, WhatsApp users will need to download around 150MB of additional app data to unlock transcription. Once enabled, you’ll be able to read accurate text transcripts of any voice messages you receive before even listening to the audio.

More details come from WABetaInfo, which shared a screenshot showing the likely user interface for voice transcription. Their overview highlights how the technology can enhance accessibility, allow reading messages in noisy environments, and provide a text backup for lengthy voice notes.

“WhatsApp uses your device’s speech recognition to provide end-to-end encrypted transcripts,” one of the strings explains, confirming the transcription happens locally on your phone for privacy.

Festive offers

The use of on-device speech recognition instead of sending audio to the cloud is a privacy-friendly approach by WhatsApp. It ensures your voice transcripts remain encrypted and never leave your phone.

While there’s no official release date yet, the code findings make it clear voice transcription for WhatsApp on Android is actively being developed. The feature promises to be a convenient upgrade, especially for those who frequently exchange voice messages on the platform.

This transcription capability was previously introduced for WhatsApp’s iOS app, and it looks like Android devices will be getting it soon too.
