Lots of Negative Content, Gadget Use in Schools will be Restricted

Jakarta – Use gadgets or devices in the school environment do not always have a positive impact because the internet also contains negative content. For this reason, the Minister of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection, Yohana Yembise, together with 3 other ministers plan to regulate its use gadgets at school.

Yohana together with the Minister of Communication and Information Rudiantara, the Ministry of Education and Culture represented by the Minister’s Expert Staff for Education and Culture Regulations of the Ministry of Education and Culture Chatarina Muliana G, and the Ministry of Religion represented by the Head of Research and Development and Education and Training of the Ministry of Religion Abdul Rahman Mas’ud issued a ministerial statement regarding restrictions on use gadgets in educational units.

Yohana said that the use of gadgets should be limited to schools and madrasas or around 8 hours a day because there is negative content, such as pornography, racial discrimination, as well as the impact on children’s psychology and health. He said that the rise in cases of sexual crimes against children was also caused by pornographic content.

“Reflecting on this, it is time for us to act to reduce the number of hours children use their devices. For this reason, parents, communities, educational institutions and ministries must do the same if we still love our children,” said Yohana in her office, Jl Medan Merdeka Barat, Central Jakarta, Friday (31/8/2018).

He urges use gadgets at school only to access things related to learning. He said that later there would be a joint decision letter (SKB) from the three ministers to propose restrictions on use gadgets at school.

“We, several ministers, Mr. Kominfo and I, including representatives of the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Ministry of Religion, have stated ministry statement to limit the use of devices in schools and madrasas. We hope that it will be statements “which the four of us have created, in the future it can be implemented in every school and madrasah,” said Yohana.

Meanwhile, Minister of Communication and Information Rudiantara said children must be accompanied and supervised when using it gadgets. He said parents must provide understanding to children in monitoring the content they access.

“I, the Minister of Communication and Information, appeal to the public, especially parents, teachers and educators in formal and informal institutions, to proactively monitor and maintain control over the use of devices by children and students, both by limiting the time and materials they access, “instill understanding and invite discussion about the negative impacts that arise from the use of devices and the content in them,” said Rudiantara.

Meanwhile, Expert Staff to the Minister for Education and Culture Regulations at the Ministry of Education and Culture, Chatarina Muliana, added that the Ministry of Education and Culture stated that schools were expected to draw up rules and regulations limiting the use of gadgets at school. This is to prevent children from being exposed to negative content, such as pornography, whether accessed via the internet or exchanged between friends.

“Education units together with parents and school committees are expected to develop school regulations to limit the use of devices in education units and determine appropriate policies for the use of devices as media for each school by providing learning opportunities and safety as the main goals,” said Chatarina.

Meanwhile, Abdul Rahman Mas’ud welcomed the plan to make a SKB regarding restrictions on the use of gadgets in schools and madrasas. Later, the continuation of the SKB will be discussed in more detail in echelon I units.
